Design consultancy Rose Design asked us to create a promotional video for the English National Opera‘s must-see classic opera Madam Butterfly. Internationally acclaimed, the music of Puccini’s dramatic story of love and loss is successfully played at the London Coliseum where ravishing scenario, gorgeous costumes, impeccable classical singing and traditional Japanese theatre entertain and engage the audience.
Using CG, we produced a 30s film where a stylish Japanese fan is the central figure, as it is in the elegant geisha fan dance performed on stage. Traveling smoothly over it, we summarized Madam Butterfly’s tireless fight for love through short sentences that pop up on screen. The use of light, sometimes illuminating the fan, other times dimming it, gives the idea of time, a reference to Butterfly’s long wait for her husband to return. The delicate piece of content has its rhythm set by a fabulous orchestral soundtrack and a powerful female voice. A glimpse of a production that has been hailed as ‘the most beautiful show of the year’.
